How can you save money on your van insurance

If you’re trying to knock some pounds off your UK van insurance and get cheaper quotes, we have a number of tips to help you do just that.

  1. Firstly, you might be able to use the No Claims Discount you’ve accumulated on your car and transfer it to your van. However, double check with the insurer as not all will allow this.
  2. Secondly, having signage on your van may reduce your premium as it’s easier to identify and therefore less likely to be stolen.
  3. And thirdly, it might be worth improving your van’s security features, such as installing better-quality alarm systems, immobilisers and trackers.

Common questions

What details do I need to compare cheap van insurance?

Don’t worry, you don’t need to go searching for paperwork before you get a van insurance quote… we only ask you questions that you should already know about the van you’re looking to insure.

Firstly, you’ll need the registration number – but if you don’t have this, you can just select the make, model and year of manufacture. We’ll also ask you for a few personal details, a bit more about the vehicle (such as any modifications and its intended use), your driving history and the type of coverage you require.

What is a voluntary and compulsory excess?

An insurance excess is the amount you agree to pay on a claim before your insurance provider foots the rest of the bill. On your van insurance quote, you may see two different figures for voluntary excess and compulsory excess.

Voluntary is the amount you decide to pay towards a claim – so you can set this from £0 upwards. Most people do however add a voluntary excess as this can reduce your insurance premium.

Then there’s the compulsory excess and this amount is decided by your insurance provider. So when picking a policy make sure you can afford the total excess (the voluntary excess + the compulsory excess).

Will modifications affect the cost of my cheap van insurance quote?

Modifications can include anything from alloy wheels, spoilers and accessories to paintwork, signage and increased engine performance. All of these could increase your premium as it might affect which insurance group your van falls into – some modifications will increase your insurance more than others.

If you don’t declare any modifications made on your van or pickup, you could end up invalidating your insurance – so it’s really important to fill out the online application form accurately.

How many people can I add to my van insurance policy?

You might want to add extra drivers to your van insurance policy for business purposes, and our application form allows you to add up to 4 others, excluding yourself. To successfully add additional drivers, you’ll need to enter personal details, driving licence information and the driving history of each person.

Subject to eligibility and exclusions. Policy conditions apply. We work with Quotezone and Insurance is provided through their panel of insurers.
